After the fire on “Gumati 2″ hydro power plant, JSC “Energo-Pro Georgia Generation” prevented pollution process efficiently as a result of operative response. Civil Security Division of the Ministry of Emergency Situation Management and Imereti Emergency Management Division were called to the location in time to conduct primary and urgent measures as well as proceed with fire liquidation works.
According to the Environmental Protection Service of JSC “Enero-Pro Georgia Generation”, the fire has resulted in approximately 5.5 tons of oil spilt in the soil and water. To calculate the volume of oil spilt by transformer, the volume of burned oil was calculated according to physical-chemical basis of fire and transformer oil combustion parameters.
As a result of the effective work of all three services, it was already possible to clean the river Rioni from oil. In order not to get even more oil in the water, drainage of channels on the substation was carried out. At present soil pollution research and cleaning works are being carried out. It should be noted that the sediment was contaminated only on the triangle surrounding the burning power transformer, owned by the company.
Localization and liquidation works were carried out and are still in process to rapidly eliminate causes for environmental pollution.
